To make branch lines more attractive, Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced the new “CityBahn” train class for local transport in 1984. For this purpose, 25 “n”-class cars (Silver Lines) were refurbished with modern interiors and painted pure orange/pebble gray. Ten Class 218 locomotives also received this striking livery.
