In 1941 and 1942, a total of four double locomotives of the type D 311 were put into service by the German Wehrmacht. The locomotive, designated D 311.02 a/b, shunted the “Dora,” the largest railway gun ever built, on the Crimean peninsula, with its sister locomotive, the D 311.01 a/b. Locomotives D 311.03 and 04 were intended for use with the “Schwerer Gustav 2” gun and presumably served in the West. A fifth and sixth double locomotive were ordered from Krupp, but could not be built due to the war.
