In 1972, the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the former GDR initially equipped three examples of the 110 series with a 1,200 hp diesel engine as a test, which also proved to be excellent in express train service. The fluid transmission was adapted accordingly, as were other components. Between 1981 and 1990, further conversions (approx. 500 locomotives) to 1,200 hp (883 kW) were carried out in Raw Stendal using the 12 KVD 18/21 AL-4 and AL-5 engines. These locomotives were designated as the 112 series.
