The Class 212 is considered a direct sub-series of the V 100, as it was built according to its development specifications. Only a more powerful 993 kW engine was used in the locomotive. Commissioned from 1962 to 1965 as the Class V 100.20, it was also intended for mainline and steep-line service, unlike the V 100.10, which was used in branch line service.
Since a larger cooling system proved to be appropriate for the increased engine power compared to the V 100.10, the front end and frame cover plate of the locomotives from V 100 2022 onwards were extended from 12,100 mm to 12,300 mm. The larger cooling system is recognizable by the vertical fins compared to the horizontal ones of the other series.
The locomotives were considered very robust and reliable, achieving high, trouble-free mileage. They were widely used throughout almost all of Germany.
