The history of the M62, known in Hungary as “Szergej,” began in 1965 with the delivery of the world’s first locomotive from Lugansk (M62 001). A further 288 locomotives were delivered to the MAV, 15 of them in broad-gauge versions. These locomotives took over heavy freight transport, thus bringing an early end to the service of the older steam locomotive designs.
