The E 03 series was created in the mid-1960s and was intended to be the most powerful DB locomotive to date for heavy passenger trains. Between 1970 and 1974, 145 series locomotives entered service. The last 30 locomotives (from 103 216 onwards) received an enlarged driver’s cab, making them 700 mm longer. Towards the end of the series’ official service life, at the suggestion of many fans, a locomotive was painted in a new traffic red livery with contrasting frames, just as had already been the case with the classic 103 in red/beige. The ROCO company sponsored this livery. As a special feature, each locomotive received a dedication text under the right-hand side driver’s cab window on the occasion of its presentation.
