Get to know Thomas.
Thomas is a blue six-wheeled steam engine (0-6-0 tank) with the number 1 on his side tanks. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the second book in Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s railway series, “Thomas the Tank Engine,” and is the main character of the four stories included. Thomas’s best friends are Percy and Toby. He works on a branch line with his carriages Annie and Clarabel.

All locomotives in the Railway Series are based on real historic engines. Thomas bears resemblance to the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway’s E2 Class 0-6-0 tender, designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913.
